I’ve got to admit that I am finding Mal quite endearing, even if I still periodically want to smash him in the head with a rock. Which I suppose only goes to prove that Mal IS the Speed Merchant, because I have the exact same response to him. :-) Total ENTP. Mal’s macho facade is both real and a total facade–real because he actually does think that well of himself, facade because he also cares much more about other people than he likes to admit. Making sure everyone else is safely on the shuttles and then staying behind with the expectation of going down with the ship–a little retro, but you’ve gotta respect that. However, DavidB is entirely wrong that Mal is Angel. Angel is obviously an INTJ, though Angelus (his demon side) is an ENTJ. Neither Mal nor the SM could ever wallow in guilt that long or do that much penance for their past transgressions. However, Mal is not Kirk or Riker, as I previously suggested–Kirk is ESTJ, Riker is ESTP, both are far too slick for their own good. Mal is just slick enough. Angel is not slick at all; he is a nrrd trying to pretend to be cool by wearing a lot of black and using too much hair product. Hell, Angel is me!
DavidB is however correct that River is the later more powerful Willow (both INFJs, like my dear Euphrosyne), while Kaylee is the younger pre-witchcraft Willow (INTJ). I will note that I think it is awesome Kaylee got her job by sleeping with the extremely dumb but moderately hot blond mechanic. He looks strikingly like I guy I went out with my sophomore year in college. Dumb blonds do have their charms…
Zoe is an ISTJ. Simon is also an ISTJ. ISTJs usually get a bad rap for being boring just because they are so uptight, but Joss lets them show their other sides at least a little. Simon really becomes rather adorable once he starts taking to a life of crime, so I have decided to allow Kaylee to heart him. Zoe needs Wash (ESFJ?) to help her to loosen up a bit on her devotion to duty.
Shepherd is probably an ENFJ. Reminds me of Laura. Serene but good sense of humor and not afraid to kick ass when necessary. DavidB is, however, wrong that Shepherd is Giles the Watcher. Giles is definitely an INTJ.
Why does Joss Whedon have so many INTJ characters? Is Joss an INTJ? Oh that would be lovely!
Inara is probably also ENFJ, but this confuses me because I heart both Shepherd and my numerous IRL ENFJ grrlfriends while Inara still irritates the crap out of me.The allegedly lesbian scene was a colossal disappointment–”Oh, sometimes it is just so restful to be with a nice soft woman instead of one of those demanding men, and yet somehow we just keep talking about men…” That is not lesbianism, that is classic male porn fantasy of lesbianism. Lame. (I must say Willow is a much more satisfying bisexual–she just loves who she loves regardless of gender, while Inara seems to a) tell people whatever they want to hear, and b) choose her partner’s based on how they can serve her immediate agenda. I understand that her attraction toward Mal and kindness to Kaylee are supposed to make her seem more human, but I’m just not buying it.)
I am not buying DavidB’s assertion that Jayne = Spike. Spike is hot, and extremely charming. Probably an INFP–used to be a poet, albeit a bad one, and has a delicious sense of humor even when totally evil, and is adorably maudlin when in love. Jayne is just a big thickheaded lug. ISTP, maybe?

Are you saying you wouldn’t do Jayne? Because I would; I just wouldn’t let him stay the night. Or talk. Unless it was “please” or “thank you.”
I confess to a terrible, terrible, lustful, gut-level weakness for great big guys…

Oh! That is adorable!
And no, I really wouldn’t do Jayne. Talking is half the fun sometimes, but if they’re too stupid to be interesting they’ve at least got to have some skillz NOT involving weaponry, or at least be able to convey some enthusiasm and gratitude. And do you think Jayne a) knows or b) cares how to please a woman? Or would EVER say please or thank you?
However, I believe Mal would likely have both skillz and good manners, and be rather amusingly talkative. I’d totally let him stay the night. Even though I’d probably have to bash him in the head with a rock in the morning.
Simon probably has no skillz, but would be very enthusiastic and grateful, and a very quick study. Now that is a type I know well. :-)
And Wash obviously would be a great deal of fun. Though I could never deal with somebody like that in an LTR–THAT much enthusiasm for ANYTHING would just exhaust and annoy me.
And I confess I’d probably do Inara. Even though I hate her guts. I just couldn’t BE her. Just like I couldn’t do Kaylee because I DO want to be her. Zoe I could do. Totally.
River I would worship but I’m not sure I could do–too much like the scary flip side of myself. It would be like that episode of Buffy when Willow’s evil parallel universe vampire twin tries to seduce the innocent young straight nice Willow and really just freaks her out. She’s intrigued, but mostly freaked out.
And now you all know way more about my erotic fantasy life than you really needed to. And Retired Geezer is going to have add Pollyanna to his grandparental control filter.

But you could tie him up and teach him some manners; nothing like a little incentive to bring out those hidden skillz… oops. Add me to the filter (as if I’m not already there).

As if we needed more proof that Euphro is more clever than I, and much, much hotter. See, that never even would have occurred to me. But how do you tie them so they can still practice their skillz? Or do you just torture them while they’re tied so that once you untie them they do whatever you say?

Both, maybe… but notice I said “tie,” not “gag.”
And that’s REALLY all I’m sayin’.

UPDATE: Oh, hell. I just watched “Heart of Gold” and now I may be coming around on Inara. Acting like a stone cold bitch to hide the true depths of your feelings and protect yourself from getting hurt more? Now there’s a dysfunctional and self-sabotaging behavior I can totally empathize with. :-)
Jayne still creeps me out, though. He’s got the crazy eyes of Vincent D’Onofrio without the intelligence.

I forget the episode, but my favorite Jane quote comes after he learns about the poison lipstick:
“That’s why I never kiss em on the mouth.”

Hmmm….it appears I somehow skipped all of Disc 2. Must reorder. I don’t know about “Jaynestown” but I must see the long-awaited fluffy dress episode, and the introduction of Mrs. Reynolds.

Mal – ENTP
Zoe – ISTJ
Wash – ENFP
Jayne – ISTP
Simon – INTP
River – ENTJ (trauma has driven her reclusive)
Inara – ENFJ
Shepard – INFJ
Your conclusions are based on misunderstandings.

I’m an ENTP myself.
